Hidden Treasures

By looking at your staff with new eyes, you might discover that you've overlooked some hidden treasures. A good way to uncover unseen talent is through the annual Performance Review process.

When I work with clients, I help them develop a review process questionnaire that conveys the company's culture and expectations and provides open-ended questions to solicit input from the employee.

The employer and employee answer the questions separately. Then they meet and compare notes. Here are some of the benefits of this process:

• Both parties find out if they're on the same page.
  
• By asking the right questions the employer can learn about the employee's knowledge, interests, motivation, ambitions, as well as their commitment to the company.
  
• An honest dialogue enables employees to learn how their performance is perceived and how they can improve their work.
